NewspaperDirect Launches Reading Map Technology

Source: NewspaperDirect Official Release

Vancouver, Canada, February 8, 2006NewspaperDirect is pleased to announce the launch of its exciting new Newspaper Reading Map technology, available now for all newspaper titles within their PressDisplay ePaper service.

Using sophisticated tracking techniques, NewspaperDirect is able to monitor the exact amount of time each reader spends reading their chosen newspaper, down to a space roughly the size of a postage stamp.

NewspaperDirect provides their Publishing partners with a colour-coded Reading Map which clearly shows where the readers invested the most time and attention. An analysis report provides details on the most-read sections, most popular articles, highest-viewed photographs and advertisements, most-read pages—all vital pieces of information for understanding readership and ultimately the value of specific sections and pages to advertisers.

Alex Kroogman, NewspaperDirect CEO said, "In the past Publishers have spent considerable sums on readership surveys, most of which tend to be based upon the reader's own perception of what they read, and what they remembered reading. For the first time in the 400 year history of newspapers we have the technology to precisely monitor actual reading behaviour in real-time".

Mr Kroogman added, "This immediacy gives Publishers an opportunity to be able to analyse and respond to reader behaviour much faster than any other research method could ever provide".

NewspaperDirect has already started to identify some illuminating behavioural trends across many newspapers, particularly in terms of overall reading time, the value of the front page, the sports section and international news sections. Some of the data is also challenging some long—held perceptions, such as the value of left-hand versus right-hand pages.

Mr Kroogman concluded, "This is just the beginning for the kind of information and analysis that we will be able to provide to our Publishing partners about their readers. We are currently working on tools to answer questions such as which sections do women read the most, how old are the most avid readers of the international section, and do readers in the USA spend more time in the travel section than in Europe. We are convinced that the information provided by the NewspaperDirect Reading Map will become highly valuable to the Publishing and the advertising communities alike".
